Every winter, our industry slows down.
If you’ve been in remediation, waterproofing, or restoration long enough, you’ve seen the pattern. January and February drag. The phone rings less. Homeowners notice problems but decide they can probably deal with them later—and would rather sit on the couch than make that call.
There are practical, technical reasons for the change. Cold winter air is drier, often making odors less noticeable or even disappear completely. Exterior water events slow down apart from the occasional snowmelt or ice dam. If homeowners don’t smell it and they don’t see active water, the issue doesn’t feel urgent.
Then there’s human nature. Winter pushes people indoors. Early on we focus on family, holidays, and getting through the colder months as we say goodbye to fall. Once those events pass, the motivation to tackle messy projects isn’t always there. A lot of things quietly move into the “we’ll deal with that in the spring” category. Even when condensation coats windows and doors, there’s often a deal with it later mentality that’s hard to overcome.
So the problems wait.
Then spring shows up.
Snow melts. Rain returns. Groundwater moves. Couches become lonely and gardens get a turn. Windows open and odors come back. Suddenly the issues that sat quietly all winter need attention—and they need it fast.
The companies that handle spring well are usually the ones that used the quiet months wisely. Winter is the time to service equipment, organize supplies, and tighten up systems so your crews can move efficiently when schedules fill up. It’s also a great time to train your technicians so they know how to get the most out of your cleaners and processes instead of trying to figure it out when three jobs land in the same week—and you’re just now realizing the air conditioner doesn’t work.
Spring isn’t a surprise. It happens every year. The companies that prepare during the slow months move through busy season with confidence instead of chaos.
